My Favorite Drugstore Make-up: Lips

You know the rule about only making a single area bold then you’re doing your makeup? Well for me, that’s absolutely never gonna be my lips. I never seem to make it past anything darker than a lip balm. There’s just too much contrast with my hair, so it’s best to keep everything light and natural looking. (says the girl with pink hair!) Anyway, here are a few of my favorites and flops in the lip tint dept.
My favorite affordable makeup: lip balms

Save: Fruit Punch Chapstick ($1) – Darn Chapstick and their seasonal flavors! Evidently this version has been discontinued, but I imagine the new Pomagranate Gumdrop is quite similar. It adds just the tiniest hint of color, and since it’s by Chapstick, of course it make my lips feel awesome!

e.l.f. Essential lip balm tint ($2) – I can’t wait to try this out in the Grapefruit color. I’ve already added it to my next order along with the Studio retractable lip brush. I’ll let you know how it goes!

e.l.f. Studio lip balm SPF 15 ($3) – I love the way this feels on my lips. It’s so silky, and has just a touch of mint tingle that you find in the lip plumpers. Unfortunately the pink shade is not very natural looking on me. I’ll definitely order it in other colors though.

Maybelline baby lips ($3) – My little cousins rave about these lip balms, but lately the only shades at my local stores are the neon ones. Umm…no thanks. I’d really like to find some of the Dr Rescue ones – maybe in Pink me Up.

NYX butter lip balm ($4)*panna cotta – My new favorite lip balm! This has an awesome raspberry scent, and leaves my lips feeling wonderful.

Covergirl smoochies ($5)*luv u & smooch – These are very hit or miss lip colors. While I like the Luv U shade, the Smooch one is actually filled with tiny bits of glitter that feel like grit on my lips. gross.

Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm ($7) *hibiscus – Just as you’d expect, this balm is very smooth, and adds just the right amount of color. It’s a great choice if you’re in the market for a natural product, but I probably wouldn’t buy it again unless it was on sale. Not when I have other favorites at half the price.

I’ve also tried:

e.l.f Essential plumping lip glaze($1)*baby doll – Do not buy if you have sensitive lips! The minty tingle in the plumbing portion is pretty strong and can boarder on burning if used on freshly exfoliated lips. It’s also a bit sticky, but not as bad as most clear glosses.

e.l.f Essential jumbo lip gloss stick ($2)*pink umbrellas – I just picked this up a few days ago, and so far I like it. There is more color pay off than I expected, and it isn’t shiny like a gloss, but it still goes on smoothly. I just wish it lasted longer.

e.l.f. Essential lip stain ($2)*nude nectar – Absolutely terrible. That’s all I have to say. It was like dragging a dried out marker across my lips and added no color at all. I’d claim that I got a dud if I hadn’t heard the same thing from other people.

NYC city proof twistable intense lip color ($3)*ballroom blush – Returned it. Yes, the color was intense (too intense for me), but it was also super dry and made my lips feel gross.

What’s your favorite lip balm or gloss?

I’ve tried to make a dent in the section, but they’re just too many to test!

  1. I'm not crazy about tinted lip color. I use lip balm a lot though. CJs blueberry crumble is my favorite and has a million uses. It's a balm as well as a cloth diaper safe butt cream… we have so many jars around here!

  2. Our ideas of splurges are definitely the same 😛 I've been on the hunt for a good red lipstick for a while now with no luck at all–I want something that's a classic red (not orangey or coral-y, but kind of a 50s housewife type red), but it can't be too intense or in-your-face, and I'm starting to doubt that what I'm looking for actually exists 😉 Love me some lip gloss and tinted balms though! I'm adding some of these to my to-try list!

    1. Ugh, reds are so hard to find! You'' probably have to go get a handful from the drugstore and return all the rejects. Such a pain! I had a really great one back when I used to dye my hair red, but of course – it melted in the car. 😛

    2. Check out the Revlon Matte Balm in "Standout". The packaging is deceiving, because it looks maroon/brick red. But, when you apply it it's a true, blue-toned red. I have returned reds before looking for the perfect one – Standout is it!
