My Little Pony Costume Sew-Along - Day 7: How to make a basic pants pattern

Moving right along...Today's pattern is super quick and easy, and I love that you can use it again and again
to make more sweatpants or pajamas for the fall/winter. Christmas pj's anyone? This pattern has got you covered.
And remember, you can do this for any sized pants. Go ahead and make matching sweats for the whole family!

How to make a basic pj pants pattern

Supplies:
a pair of pants that fit well - marker - ruler - paper

How to make a simple pair of pants

Use your ruler to draw a long vertical line, and then square a horizontal line across the bottom. Kinda like an upside-down T.

How to trace a pattern from an existing pair of pants

Fold your pants along the front crotch seam length.
Line the side seam up with your vertical line, and the hem with the horizontal.
Trace around the inseam, crotch length, and waistband.

Most pants have a longer crotch length in the back than in the front, so make sure you are following the correct seam.

How to make a pair of sweatpants

Fold your pants along the back crotch seam this time, and re-align them with your lines.
Trace along the inseam, crotch length, and waistband again.

You should now have a pattern similar to this one.

Now you can go ahead and add your seam allowance around the outside.
The measurement is entirely up to you, but be sure to leave extra length for the hem and elastic casing at the waist.
That's it! Cut out 2 piece, and tomorrow we'll stitch them up. Easy Peasy.

  1. Thank you so much for this whole My Little Pony tutorial. Your instructions and pictures are SO EASY to follow. I haven't gotten to the sewing stages of these pants yet, but it seems as though there won't be a seam along the outer leg. Is that right? Or are we supposed to cut down the vertical line dividing the front and back of the pants, add seam allowances, and then sew those first? Is there an advantage to having an outer seam? Does it fit/look better?

  2. Hi Sarah,
You're very welcome! I'm so glad you're finding it easy to follow along. As far as the pants go - you can add the side seam in if you'd like, but it won't really make much difference aside from making more work for yourself. :-) The outer seam is what allows you to change the shape of the pants leg, so for anything with a lounge/sweatpants look, I don't bother no matter what the size. It's just a personal preference, but if you can save some time - why not?
