How to make a Dum Dum lollipop topiary.

I accidently misplaced all the tutorial photos that I took while I was making these topiaries, and then didn't even get a good shot of them at the party. Blogger Fail! But I decided to jot down the directions anyway just in case anyone is interested. It wasn't a very hard project, so I hope you can follow along easily. If you have any questions though, please feel free to send me an e-mail.

Supplies:
Terracotta Pot - Styrofoam Ball - 1 inch Dowel - Great Stuff Expanding Foam
Easter Grass - Dum Dum Lollipops - Hot Glue - Tape - Paint (Green & another color)

  • Cut the dowel to your desired length and press it firmly into the Styrofoam ball to make an indentation. Set the ball aside and paint the dowel green.
  • Paint the terracotta pot your chosen color.
  • Use tape (masking, painters, or duck) to cover the hole in the bottom of the pot. Tape a grid on the top of the pot to help keep the dowel centered.
  • Fill the pot with Great Stuff to secure the dowel. Spray slowly and only little at a time, using less than you think you'll need. This stuff continues to grow for quite awhile!
  • Cut the hole for the dowel in the Styrofoam ball, and begin covering it with lollipops. Start at the top pushing them in firmly, and keeping them close together to prevent gaps. I used over 500 Dum Dums for my two topiaries (removing all the brown ones).
  • Once the spray foam has set, peel off the tape grid and carve away any excess foam.
  • Paint the top of the spray foam green to hide the yellow color.
  • After the green paint has dried, begin gluing the Easter grass in place and trim away any odd strands.
  • Glue the Styrofoam ball on top of the dowel, and add a bow if desired.

Candy Birthday Party

My aunt has decided to use these for decorations now that the party is over,
so I'll try to get some better pictures the next time I visit.

  3. What size ball did you use? Also, I bought a green floral one because it's less dense, we bought a smaller white one and it was much more dense and hard to place the suckers into it.

    1. I'm pretty sure it was an 8" ball, but the size you'd need would depend on the size pot you're using. (I tried to go with the same size so the "flower" would be just slightly larger than the pot.) Mine was definitely a white styrofoam one though, and you're right it is a little tough to get some of the pops in. I didn't even think to try a green one but they may work even better. Good Luck!
