The Sadie Top

Remember the Butterfly Playdate Dress from last week?
Well, the Sadie Top is another sewing project from Craftiness in Not Optional that I can finally
check off my To-Make list. Now Jess probably only had about 2 dozen more patterns for me to try! : )

This shirt was a bit of an experiment for me. If you ever happen to take a peek in my closet, you would not find a single piece of patterned clothing in the bunch. I wear jeans and a solid color V-neck tee pretty much every single day. (when I manage to get out of my pj's of course!) It's very boring, but I haven't updated my wardrobe since before Reli was born. Back then I worked at the GAP, so jeans and tees were pretty much my uniform.
Hopefully I'll get to upgrade once I lose this baby weight, but I digress...

Because I never wear prints myself, I have the most terrible time picking coordinating fabrics for my sewing projects. I see tons of really cute fabric choices around bloggy-land, but can't seem to manage it for myself.
So when I decided on this large floral for the body of the shirt, I took it along to the fabric store hoping something cute would jump out at me.

The guy at the cutting table looked at me like I had lost my mind when I told him I was going to use these two fabrics together, but I was sure it was fate when I found those little flower buttons that match perfectly!

I kinda like it, but I have to keep telling myself that kids can wear "busy" without looking too odd.
So what do you think? Did I do a good job, or should I just stick to my solids from now on?

  1. I think it's perfect! And those little buttons are just the right touch. I'm like you, I mostly wear solids. But for the kids, I LOVE combining prints, and sometimes go overboard! I think it is ok with little kids, though!

  2. I wear all solids too! I am now shopping for post-baby stuff that fits, and definitely limiting my solids and trying for patterns! But I still love solids. :) That shirt turned out darling.

  3. I love the top! I actually made Aubrey a dress recently that looks similar to this only I used a vintage fabric from my neighbor (She said she hasn't bough fabric since the 70s) and some linen blend I can send you a pic if you want to see it! But I love the two together! If you can't wear what you want, whats the point of wearing anything at all?
